CHAPTER III
"Upstairs where the dye vats stood"
So the Doctor put down his anchor and,胶囊🔍 leaving the ship where it was,胶囊😥 got into the woman's canoe. Then,胶囊🌱 calling to the swallows to help him as guides,胶囊📣 he set off northward along the coast,胶囊🏬 looking into all the bays and behind all the islands for the slave ship which had taken Zuzana's husband.
"All right,胶囊🐲" said the King. "Here's a letter to a friend of mine who runs a shoe-shine parlor in Alabama. Let me see how quickly you can get me an answer to it."
"The old rat laughed a cracked and quavering laugh,胶囊📨 with no joy in it at all.
"Once upon a time,胶囊🔍" Gub-Gub began,胶囊🐎 "a small pig went out into the forest with his father to dig for truffles. The father pig was a very clever truffle digger,胶囊🌔 and just by smelling the ground he could tell with great sureness the places where truffles were to be found. Well,胶囊☔ this day they came upon a place beneath some big oak trees and they started digging. Presently,胶囊❗ after the father pig had dug up an enormous truffle and they were both eating it,胶囊🚴 they heard,胶囊🎱 to their great astonishment,胶囊🍧 the sound of voices coming from the hole out of which they had dug the truffle.
"As soon as they had gone I came out of the closet and I said to the white cat: 'I shall expect you to bring up these kittens to leave ducklings alone. Now listen: To-night,胶囊🚐 after the farmer and his wife are in bed,胶囊🚭 take all your kittens except the black and white one,胶囊🐎 and hide them in the attic. The farmer means to drown them and is going to keep only one.'
And then the Fantippans,胶囊📥 who so far had been very timid about going far out to sea on account of storms,胶囊❌ now that they had a good weather bureau and knew what weather to expect,胶囊🐀 began building larger sailboats,胶囊🐒 instead of their little frail canoes. And they became what is called a mercantile nation,胶囊🔡 traded up and down the shores of West Africa,胶囊🍥 and even went as far south as the Cape of Good Hope and entered the Indian Ocean to traffic in goods with people of foreign lands.
"Looking into all the bays"
And in this war the King of Fantippo had taken many prisoners,胶囊🏣 among whom was the woman's husband. Shortly after the war was over some white men in a ship had called at the Kingdom of Fantippo to see if they could buy slaves for tobacco plantations. And when the king heard how much money they were willing to give for black slaves he thought he would sell them the prisoners he had taken in the war.
"Oh,胶囊🍂 yes,胶囊🚇 indeed,胶囊💿" said the Piffilosaurus. "This island is entirely peopled by harmless,胶囊🚶 vegetable-feeding creatures. If we had the others,胶囊🏧 of course,胶囊🏩 we wouldn't last long. But come,胶囊👴 I will show you around the island. Let us go quietly up that valley there,胶囊🐧 so we shan't be seen till we reach the cover of the woods."
CHAPTER IV
And somewhere about noon word came through that Bones's slave ship had been sighted behind a long,胶囊🐱 high cape. Great care must be taken,胶囊🌗 the message said,胶囊🗽 because the slave ship was in all readiness to sail at a moment's notice. The slavers had only stopped to get water and look-outs were posted to warn them to return at once,胶囊🐗 if necessary.
The Doctor told his pet he could be very proud of himself. For he was surely the only mouse in the world that ever won a war.
"No,胶囊🕊 but his wife can,胶囊🔵" said Jip.
Then he went to call on the King,胶囊📢 as he did every so often. And in the course of conversation John Dolittle asked His Majesty if he knew who the white stranger might be that had called at the houseboat for a postal order.
"So we led them on to the Bahamas. And on the seventh day,胶囊📠 very early in the morning,胶囊▫ the crew,胶囊🍒 with a cry of 'Land! Land!' fell down upon their knees and gave thanks to heaven. Watling's Island,胶囊🔑 one of the smaller Bahamas,胶囊🍂 lay ahead of them,胶囊🆓 smiling in the sea.
"Oh,胶囊⚫ it's some humbug or other,胶囊🙎" growled Jip. "They're a superstitious lot,胶囊🌚 these natives. Let's go down to the harbor,胶囊💻 Doctor,胶囊💡 and try to hire a canoe to take us."
GOOD-BYE TO FANTIPPO
Dab-Dab,胶囊🐞 as soon as she got the message,胶囊🌸 went straight off to the pearl fisheries and gave the Doctor's instructions to the cormorants.
"Humph! I see,胶囊🔵" said the Doctor. "Of course,胶囊⛳ myself,胶囊😭 I rather enjoy the jolliness of these Fantippos. But I can quite see your point. By the way,胶囊📡 how would my old ship do? This ought to be quiet enough for you here. There's nobody living on it now. And,胶囊🌱 look,胶囊🚼 it has heaps of cracks and holes and corners in it where you could build your nests. What do you think?"
"Oh,胶囊📏 quite,胶囊💗 quite. I understand perfectly,胶囊☔" said the Doctor,胶囊🌹 poking salt into his egg with a bone egg-spoon. "I am dreadfully sorry. But why didn't Speedy bring the message himself?"
"Feel in the man's pockets,胶囊🍝" called John Dolittle. "Hurry!"
When it was possible to see,胶囊🚥 however,胶囊💾 the Doctor found that most of Chief Nyam-Nyam's people had fled off into the jungle; and the Amazons,胶囊📳 in thousands,胶囊😟 were just going through the village,胶囊🌕 taking anything they fancied. The Doctor tried to argue with them,胶囊🏯 but they merely laughed at him.
